A new way of looking at the Global Goals: economies and societies should be seen as embedded parts of the biosphere.
In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), creating a shared blueprint for global peace and prosperity. These goals target ending poverty, fighting inequality, and addressing the urgency of climate change. Using the SDGs as a guide, it is now up to all of us—governments, businesses, civil society, and the general public—to work together to build a better future. At Bard, we are using the SDG Learning Objectives to measure courses, research, and special programs and their relationship to the global goals.

Eradicating poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice and the key to unlocking an enormous human potential. Still, nearly half of the world’s population lives in poverty, and lack of food and clean water is killing thousands every single day of the year. Together, we can feed the hungry, wipe out disease and give everyone in the world a chance to prosper and live a productive and rich life.

Healthy oceans and seas are essential to our existence. They cover 70 percent of our planet and we rely on them for food, energy and water. Yet, we have managed to do tremendous damage to these precious resources. We must protect them by eliminating pollution and overfishing and immediately start to responsibly manage and protect all marine life around the world.

A flourishing life on land is the foundation for our life on this planet. We are all part of the planet’s ecosystem and we have caused severe damage to it through deforestation, loss of natural habitats and land degradation. Promoting a sustainable use of our ecosystems and preserving biodiversity is not a cause. It is the key to our own survival.

Worldwide Climate and Justice Education Week
This project, organized by Bard College's Graduate Programs in Sustainability, expands traditional climate education efforts into a weeklong global event focused on both climate change and justice. The program has evolved from a single day teach-in to a comprehensive week of activities, demonstrating ongoing innovation and adaptation. The project reaches over 70,000 students in more than 70 countries, making it a large-scale educational initiative with significant impact. By combining climate science with justice issues, the program offers a unique, holistic perspective on environmental challenges.
Plastic Reduction Partner with National Wildlife Foundation
Bard College's efforts to reduce plastic use on campus has earned it bronze-level recognition as one of the first two US campuses certified as a Plastics Reduction Partner by the National Wildlife Federation. This initiative demonstrates Bard's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship through a comprehensive, student-led effort to reduce single-use plastics on campus.
Audubon Sustainable Community Program
Bard College, through its Center for Civic Engagement and Office of Sustainability, played a crucial role in a four-year initiative to help Red Hook achieve the Audubon International Sustainable Community certification. This collaborative effort involved comprehensive community engagement, strategic planning, and implementation of sustainability projects.
