It takes more than an office of sustainability to make an equitable,
environmentally conscious, and economically competitive institution. Staff, program structure, and other resources help an institution organize and implement sustainability initiatives.
Sustainability planning affords an institution the opportunity to clarify its vision of a sustainable future, establish priorities, and help guide budgeting and decision making. Targeted sustainability areas include planning, inclusive and participatory governance, support for underrepresented groups, investor responsibility, investment disclosure, employee compensation, and workplace health and safety.

Planning and Administration Initiatives

  • Diversity and Affordability
Higher education opens doors to opportunities that can help create a more equitable world, and those doors must be open through affordable programs accessible to all regardless of race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, and other differences. In addition, a diverse student body, faculty, and staff provide rich resources for learning and collaboration.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion DEI Programs

  • Good Health and Well-Being
An institution’s people define its character and capacity to perform; and so, an institution’s achievements can only be as strong as its community. An institution can bolster the strength of its community by offering benefits and wages that serve to respectfully and ethically compensate workers and by acting to protect the health, safety, and well-being of the campus community.

Investment and Finance

Collectively, colleges and universities invest hundreds of billions of dollars. Like other decisions that institutions make, these investments have impacts that are both local and global in scope. By using the tools of sustainable investing, institutions can improve the long-term health of their endowments, encourage better corporate behavior, support innovation in sustainable products and services, support sustainability in their community, and help build a more just and sustainable financial system.  Bard has a local annual impact on the economy exceeding $200,000,000.  The College has had a Green Fund since 2009, managed by the College's Chief Sustainability Officer.

Investment and Finance

The Green Fund supports
  • Sustainability Mini Grants as voted on by the Bard Sustainability Council (BSC)
  • Socially Responsible Investment Committee (SRIC) $2400 annually (as approved in 2019 by the BSC) for shareholder advocacy: filing of shareholder resolutions (McDonalds, Urban Outfitters, Exxon Mobil)
  • Sustainable transportation-related projects and programs (ensure attribution to the vehicle registration fees paid by students) – Bard Bike Park at Olin, covered bike rack at Cruger, Electric cart, pedicab
  • New construction, renewable energy and energy efficiency programs reimbursable/cost shared by NYSERDA and other rebate programs that contribute to life cycle savings for the College (e.g. enhanced commissioning, prepaid power purchase agreement for Bartlett Solar, efficient lighting)
  • Improvements needed for participating in energy curtailment programs

Green Fund income
  • All student vehicle registration fees
  • Energy curtailment program rebates
  • NYSERDA rebates when not needed for project
  • Class Gifts when targeted at sustainability
  • Sustainability Grants
  • Income from enhanced recycling (cell phones, grease, metal)
