Bard College Residences Honored With Passive House Certification for Energy Efficiency

Bard College is pleased to announce that all four of the residence buildings of its North Campus Residence Complex on the College’s Annandale campus have achieved the Passive House Certification from the Passive House Institute (PHI), an organization that sets rigorous energy-efficient building standards. Certification from PHI is recognized worldwide as one of the most demanding and respected standards in building science, requiring commitment, collaboration, and attention to detail from the owner, design team, and construction team alike. This achievement reflects Bard’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, which the College has prioritized and invested in for over 30 years.

“Bard is pleased to be an early adopter among US institutions of higher education to have been awarded the PHI certification for a residential complex of this size,” said Taun Toay, senior vice president and chief financial officer at Bard College. “In combination with our decades of leadership in the use of geothermal heat exchange systems, we are making strides to reach our pledge to be a climate neutral institution.”

The new residence halls are completely geothermal, with each building connected to a wellfield of 14-17 boreholes to provide high-efficiency heating and cooling, and are some of the most energy efficient buildings on campus. Bard College has been a leader and early adopter of geothermal and heat pump technology, with systems dating to the late 1980s. Nearly 50% of the main campus building area utilizes geothermal technology for heating and cooling, accounting for over 40 buildings on campus, and it is the default for all new construction projects. There are over 630 geothermal wells across campus, hidden beneath the surface.

Bard’s North Campus Residence Complex and the Maya Lin Performing Arts Studio, both of which opened this year, continue Bard’s legacy of pursuing sustainability best practices. Bard’s Office of Sustainability also leads multiple initiatives, including the conversion of the existing Stevenson Library to geothermal heating and cooling, a campus-wide commitment to renewable energy (including over 1MW of on-site solar capacity and developing a micro-hydro system at its Saw Kill Creek dam), and upgrading nearly all interior and exterior lighting to LED, to bring the College closer to fulfilling its pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.

Additionally, the North Campus Residence Complex, constructed in collaboration with architecture firm KPF, design studio CIVILIAN, and project management firm DBI Projects, was honored earlier this year with a 2026 DOE Better Projects Award, which recognizes innovative, industry-leading accomplishments in implementing energy, water, and waste saving measures. The North Campus dorms and the Stevenson Library received 2026 ACEC awards for engineering excellence.

Hudson Valley Community Air Network, led by Bard College’s Community Sciences Lab at the Center for Environmental Sciences and Humanities, was featured by Chronogram magazine in an article about the ongoing efforts to track and trace pollution in the air of the Hudson Valley region. The article notes that for decades, the area’s environmental consciousness has been organized around water, whereas air was not tracked closely until initiatives led by Bard’s Center for Environmental Sciences and Humanities. The establishment of the Kingston Air Quality Initiative, and the Hudson Valley Air Quality Coalition in 2021, paved the way for this year’s efforts by Bard and Ulster County to install 17 new street-level sensors across the county. These newest sensors are strategically placed in public areas where people gather and learn, like libraries, town halls, and community centers, to collect data that can be accessed freely by the surrounding communities. “We didn’t want community data to be controlled by private people or entities,” says Desiree Lyle, program director of Bard College’s Center for Environmental Sciences and Humanities. 

The Center for Environmental Sciences and Humanities puts Bard’s dedication to the environment, science, and social change into practice to support the fair management of our shared natural resources. The center conducts quantitative research in the natural and social sciences, crafts communication, participates in policy making, and bridges academic inquiry with community needs. The data and insights collected through CESH related projects are applied directly back to communities, with the end goal of addressing and solving environmental problems in real time.

In recent weeks, Bard’s MBA in Sustainability has received recognition by several prominent ranking and ratings systems. The program has, for the sixth consecutive year, been named the #1 Green MBA by The Princeton Review in the publication’s 2027 business school rankings, and has also earned #1 MBA for Nonprofits ranking by the Review for the third consecutive year, placing Bard ahead of institutions including Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, Berkeley, and Northwestern. Additionally, CEO awarded Bard an AAA rating in its Green MBA Index, which assesses how thoroughly sustainability is integrated into an MBA program’s curriculum, hands-on learning opportunities, research, institutional strategy, and graduate outcomes.

Unlike many business school rankings, The Princeton Review evaluations are based on student experience, and the top Green MBA ranking reflects how well students believe their MBA prepares them to address environmental, sustainability, and social responsibility issues throughout their careers. The top MBA for Nonprofits ranking recognizes programs that prepare graduates for mission-driven leadership.

“As sustainability becomes increasingly central to business success, organizations need leaders who can connect financial performance with environmental and social outcomes,” said Dr. Eban Goodstein, director of the Bard MBA in Sustainability. “That's exactly what our students learn to do.”

Rather than offering sustainability as an elective or concentration, Bard’s MBA in Sustainability weaves it throughout the curriculum. Every course—from finance and accounting to marketing, operations, leadership, and strategy—helps students understand how business decisions create both financial and environmental outcomes.

Bard College Center for Environmental Sciences and Humanities Receives $44,892 EPA Grant to Improve Air Quality and Public Health Across Underserved Neighborhoods in New York State
The Center for Environmental Sciences and Humanities (CESH) at Bard College has received a $44,892 sub-award through the Research Foundation for SUNY Albany as part of a federal grant with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The grant will support a project with the overarching goal of improving air quality and public health across underserved neighborhoods in New York State by establishing a community driven network platform to enhance understanding of sustainable outdoor and indoor air quality. The Principal Investigator for this grant is Dr. Aynul Bari at SUNY Albany.

Through the Community Sciences Lab within CESH, Bard will provide technical and analytical support for the project over two years for study sites in the Hudson Valley, including sites in Kingston, Red Hook, Annandale-on-Hudson, Newburgh, and Poughkeepsie. Specifically, CESH will provide and install weather stations, with air quality and meteorology sensors, at Newburgh and Poughkeepsie sites; and support Dr. Bari’s group in monitoring indoor and outdoor air quality in 40 homes in the Hudson Valley over the next three years—testing for a broad range of air pollutants, including black carbon, volatile organic compounds, ultrafine particles, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and ozone. Bard student involvement will include supporting monitoring efforts (indoor and out) and using the air quality data to assess air quality challenges in the Hudson Valley in classes.

“We are incredibly thankful to Dr. Aynul Bari and the Research Foundation for SUNY Albany for including us in this EPA grant,” said M. Elias Dueker, associate professor of Environmental and Urban Studies at Bard. “We look forward to using these funds to expand our indoor and outdoor air quality work with groups like the Kingston Air Quality Initiative and the Hudson Valley Air Quality Coalition. The right to breathe clean air inside and outside our homes is not something we can take for granted as we wrestle with important climate-based challenges, including increased wildfire smoke plumes from other parts of the country, flood-induced molding of our aging housing stock, and increased wood burning in our valley communities.”

The Community Sciences Lab (CSL) was created to support the work conducted by CESH. Built on the success of the Bard Water Lab and its partnership with the Saw Kill Watershed Community (SKWC), CSL expands CESH’s reach by allowing us to refocus our work on projects that address the interconnectedness of land, air, water, and communities. CSL projects include: Saw Kill Monitoring Program, Roe Jan Monitoring Program, Kingston Air Quality Initiative, Bard Campus Station, Hudsonia Eel Project, and Amphibian Migration.
